Spiderman 2 rocks!!! Although in a more humane kind of way...

Wednesday, June 30, 2004

Hi people! I'm just back from watching Spiderman 2. And you know what? The movie is very great! Go watch it! Twice, even thrice, I don't care, just go watch it. I must say it's a much better film than the first one. And I was lucky that I met this guy who wanted to know what's going on, why lotsa people are queing up at the movie entrance when there's no movie tickets being sold at the counters. He asked those questions to a movie attendant and I overheard what he said. Knowing that that's my only chance to do a good deed (I guess...), I just gave the extra ticket that I had to him. He gratefully accepted it. Well, at least it didn't go to waste...

On to the movie. If most of you remember the first movie, it had lots of action, right? At least my impression of the movie was like that. It had a lot of encounters with the Green Goblin, lots of special effects, fights, and so on. But this time, the fight scenes (although they occur spectacularly) take a back seat to something else: the human side of Spidey. This time, the movie shows how Spidey copes with being a superhero that sacrifices his life for the sake of others. We're shown how his grades are falling, how he gets fired for always being late, how his sweetheart Mary Jane slowly loses faith in his love for her, all because he's busy saving the world. And we're shown how he has to live in a very much run-down apartment, always paying his rent late. This pressures him a lot to the point that he quits being Spiderman. Of course, he'll continue being Spidey after a pivotal moment in the movie, but you all know that don't you?

The fight scenes, they do take a back seat to all those dramatic actions; but when they're presented to us, they were spectacular. They were great. But unfortunately they show too little of Doctor Octopus in the movie. Yes, he's the main villain in this one, but don't let the posters, trailers and adverts fool you: he's not as prominent a villain as the Green Goblin was in the first movie. I think he's shown in only a quarter of the movie, while the remaining parts of the movie show more about Spidey and his life. But having said that, Alfred Mollina as Doctor Octopus' acting is very good.

All in all, I'd give this movie a serious thumbs up. 4 stars out of 5, anyone? Yup, it's that good. Go watch it!
